good evening bloggers!
so as i pack my last bag it finally hits me that im going to the Caribbean for the next week. One last BAM before school starts. My phone wont work there and as my two other friends are a little more upset about that, I am really looking forward to the break.
Stop and think how many times a day we check our phones. sometimes waiting/ expecting /hoping for a call or text from that special someone. Sometimes we are waiting to hear some exciting news. Sometimes we are making plans about the coming night. Sometimes we are just catching up with a friend with a few short texts. And sometimes we just wanna know someone else is out there. That constant connection with the rest of the world, is it comforting? with just a few taps and the hit of the send button we can send whatever we like to whoever we like with only road block being the lack of service or a low battery. There is no rejection. No stink eye. and no first reactions. Everything that is sent is thought out, typed and maybe even edited a few times. people censor what they say in some situations via text and over talk in others. But think about it.... is this how life was supposed to be? Taking a friend out to a birthday dinner has been replaced with a quick happy birthday text. I read an article a few months ago about how people regret their drunken nights now more than ever due to drunk texting and calling. I am attached to my phone as much as the next person but it just got me thinking. Back in the day people seemed a lot more chill, simple, and personal. I feel as if cell phones have made us a more stressed out complex and cold society.
A little over 2 and a half years ago I went on a retreat where they took our phones from us for the entire weekend. Being a group of high schoolers, we freaked out at first. However by the end of the trip we have formed a bond closer than i have with anyone before. It was incredible. Despite everything amazing that went down that week, the lack of cell phones really made that retreat what it was. For that entire weekend we were all there 100%. How often does that happen? normally we are constantly in connection with someone else. How many times have you been to a restaurant and seen more than one person at a table texting. That is one of my pet peeves! People have problems with being mentally physically emotionally and cyberlly all in one place.
So this week i am going to work on that. While i am hanging out with the monkeys I am not going to be talking to my roommate about school. Or when i am swimming with my friends i am not going to also be chatting it up with my friend about her latest break up. I am just going to be. <3
